Three species of wild ducks, held in captivity, were subjected to an acute whole-body dose of gamma irradiation to determine radiation sensitivity of adults. The LD50(30) as determined by probit analysis was 485 R for Anas crecca, 715 R for Anas discors, and 894 R for Anas clypeata. Birds dying during the first 24 hours after irradiation had extensive intestinal hemorrhages, whereas subsequent deaths appeared to be due to hema-topoietic failure.

Avian influenza virus prevalence in migratory waterfowl in the United States, 2007-2009.
We analyzed 155,535 samples collected for surveillance of avian influenza viruses (AIVs), in the United States from 2007 to 2009, from migratory waterfowl (ducks, geese, and swans). The goal was to elucidate patterns of prevalence by flyway and functional groups to determine targets for future surveillance. Apparent prevalence of AIV was highest in the Pacific Flyway in 2007-2008 (14.2% and 14....
متن کاملA flyway perspective of foraging activity in Eurasian Green-winged Teal, Anas crecca crecca
Time–activity budgets in the family Anatidae are available for the wintering and breeding periods. We present the first flyway-level study of foraging time in a long-distance migrant, the Eurasian Green-winged Teal, Anas crecca crecca L., 1758 (‘‘Teal’’). Behavioral data from early and late spring staging, breeding, and molting sites were collected with standardized protocols to explore differe...

Thirty-eight shoveler ducks, Anas clypeata , were collected in the Rio Grande Valley, Hudspeth County, Texas. Nineteen species of helminths, six species of lice and a sarcosporidian, Sarcocystis rileyi , were recorded. Seventeen of the nineteen species of helminths were observed in fall migrants and twelve species were recorded from spring migrants. The nematode Alifilaria pochardi Ali, 1969, i...
متن کاملAvian diets in a saline ecosystem: Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA
Saline lakes provide a prey-rich, predator-free environment for birds to utilize during migration and stopover periods. The Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah is the largest salt lake in North America and is utilized by millions of migratory birds. It also is host to multiple commercial endeavors. Proposed expansion of commercial use of the GSL would result in increased impounded area and water extrac...
متن کاملA parapatric propensity for breeding precludes the completion of speciation in common teal (Anas crecca, sensu lato).
Speciation is a process in which genetic drift and selection cause divergence over time. However, there is no rule dictating the time required for speciation, and even low levels of gene flow hinder divergence, so that taxa may be poised at the threshold of speciation for long periods of evolutionary time. We sequenced mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and eight nuclear introns (nuDNA) to estimate geno...
